How to Protect Your Home From an Emergency Plumbing Problem

How to Protect Your Home From an Emergency Plumbing Problem

There are only a handful of things worse as a homeowner in Ottawa than having to call in emergency plumbing professionals to tackle a major plumbing emergency.

Almost all plumbing emergencies revolve around a significant amount of water being where it shouldn’t be in the home, and no small amount of plumbing emergencies involve toilets and waste pipes that can get more than a little bit messy.

Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of plumbing emergencies out there can be completely avoided in 99.9% of all circumstances. You just need to make sure that you’re doing everything you can as a homeowner to put up these issues to bed before they grow into nightmares.

Inspect your plumbing set up every six months for leaks and damage

It’s impossible to prevent emergencies in advance unless you know that they are coming down the pipe (no pun intended), which is why you’re going to want to inspect your plumbing systems every six months or so to make sure that everything is operating exactly as it should.

Make sure that your plumbing fixtures and faucets are tightened and aren’t leaking. Grab a flashlight and head down into the basement to inspect your pipes. Look for condensation, leaks, or any other damage/instructions that need to be addressed before they grow into serious issues. If you have any concerns or notice anything awry, give Faucet Fix a call and we’ll make it right.

Upgrade your plumbing set up sequentially over time

The overwhelming majority of people out there have plumbing systems that are older than they really should be. If your sink, faucet, and pipes haven’t been touched since Pierre Trudeau was Prime Minister, you know what we’re talking about. Unfortunately, homeowners do not repair or replace their plumbing system and fixtures until a problem forces them to act.

If you know that your plumbing system is more than twenty years old, it may be a good idea to sequentially update your plumbing. Start with the most important components first before moving into the lesser important ones. This will stop emergencies from happening without breaking your bank account in the process.

Only use the highest quality construction materials and plumbing supplies available

Finally, it’s important that you use only the highest quality construction materials and plumbing supplies when you do decide to upgrade, to repair, and to replace plumbing components.

There is always going to be a bit of a temptation to cut corners and cut costs, but you’d never want to do that when you’re talking about plumbing issues. That’s a surefire way to guarantee water gets into places that it shouldn’t – and there’s nothing more destructive in the home than water where it isn’t supposed to be! We’re happy to recommend the best plumbing products for your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and outdoors.
